Field Rules

KENT RADIO AEROMODELERS – FIELD RULES 2022

  1. Each member of the club is responsible for safety. Each member shall prepare for and conduct their flying activities in a safe manner. It is the obligation of each club member to conduct themselves and to conduct their flying so as not to cause injury to others or their property.

  1. All AMA safety rules must be always followed.  Please see the AMA Safety Program Handbook at this link:  Handbook

  1. No more than five (5) aircraft may be airborne at any one time. Flyers are to utilize one of the five flight stations located on the field to promote safer flying. An exception to this rule is made for group or exhibition flying where all members of the group or team may stand together to communicate and coordinate flight maneuvers. Likewise, turbine jet flyers (not electrics) or special exhibition or 3D flyers, when given control of the flight line for up to 15 minutes max, may determine where is best for them to execute their flight.

  1. Common courtesy and safety shall always prevail. Calling out your intentions in a loud voice for

“LANDING”, “DEAD STICK”, TOUCH AND GO”, “TAKING OFF”,”TAXIING OUT”, “ON THE FIELD”, LAST ONE OFF THE FIELD COMMUNICATES “CLEAR”, ETC. is expected whenever more than one flyer is at the field.

  1. Before any individual flying on 72MHz can turn on their transmitter, they must have in their possession the frequency pin that corresponds to their transmitter frequency. The flyer must replace the frequency pin with a pin holding their AMA card on the frequency control board. All flyers flying 2.4 GHz must have their AMA card displayed on their person within the club supplied name tag pouch. (Visitors will be required to get a pouch from the pin box and display their AMA card while visiting.) (No current AMA ID card, NO FLY)

Flyers may hold only one frequency control pin at any one time. During club events or on busy flying days, the frequency control pin must be returned to the pin board or offered to other pilots sharing the same frequency after each flight.

  1. All engines .050 and larger must be equipped with a manufactured stock muffler, tuned muffled pipe, or modified muffler and appropriate propeller that reduce the engine noise level to 96 DB measured from a 20-foot distance over a soft field (sod) or 98 DB measured from a 20-foot distance over hard surface (pavement/concrete). (AMA document #927 link here:  Document).

  1. Please leave the field cleaner than when you arrived. (Smokers, please dispose of your butts properly.) Be sure to pick up any used rubber bands, props, and any other model airplane droppings. Remove all food wrappers, soft drink cans, Styrofoam containers, etc. Remember, there is no trash removal service at the field (but many rodents and bugs).

  1. There will be no flying behind the established flight line (straight line extending over the horizon to the east and west indefinitely). Repeated violations of this rule are subject to expulsion from the club.

  1. Members are allowed to have one flying guest per day and the member must be present with the guest. To fly solo, all guests must be an AMA member or in the AMA application process, otherwise be under the direct supervision of a club member. All visitors must read and agree to abide by all KRAM field rules. A guest that uses club facilities more than 3 times is expected to join the club.

  1. Flying hours for powered flight at the field are: Electric powered aircraft are permitted Monday through Sunday from sunrise until sunset plus thirty minutes. Gas and glow powered aircraft are permitted Monday through Sunday from 9:00AM until sunset plus thirty minutes or 9:00PM, whichever is earlier. (See a weather app for sunrise / sunset time daily.) No flying allowed after this time unless approved as part of a special event approved by the Board of Directors.)

  1. The field is owned by the person mowing the grass. He shall determine what, if any, flying shall occur while he is mowing.

  1. The fabric runway and the airspace above the runway is to be kept open at all times for take-off and landings. Aircraft (of any sort) are not allowed to hover or hang over the runway, approach or exit of the runway. “Touch & Go” landings are permitted after the pilot calls out “Touch & Go” before each maneuver.

  1. Flying must generally be in an oval or racetrack pattern and all flyers must go in the same direction (clockwise or counterclockwise). On special event days, club officials will determine the direction of take-off & landing. On other days, members in attendance should reach an agreement on the direction of take-off, landing and flying.

  1. All Flying, including high speed passes and 3-D maneuvers, are to be conducted north of the runway. No flight maneuvers, take offs, or landings should be towards the flight line/pilot line or spectators.

  1. No taxing in the pits. Large airplanes that cannot be carried to the taxiway should be moved to the taxiway with a guiding/restraining hand on the rudder.

  1. Use airplane restraints (or assistant) to hold your airplane while starting.

  1. Prolonged engine runs (gas/glow/turbine/electric) is to be done at the far east or far west end of the pits away from other pilots/spectators and the flight line.

  1. All landing must be made either on the runway or the grass to the North of the runway.

  1. Drinking of ANY ALCOHOLIC beverages or using legal or illegal drugs at the flying field that may affect your ability to safely fly is prohibited and will result in immediate expulsion from the club. ANY Non-Member found at the flying site drinking alcohol or using drugs will be asked to leave the field immediately. (Some discretion is allowed for CD’s to make allowances for after-hours activities at multi-day events. See Bylaws IV C)

  1. The fire pit may be placed anywhere in the spectator area (between the pit fence and the parking area) and safely away from the shelter. All fires must be out with the spark arrester in place when the field is vacated. Bring your own gallon of water to douse the fire. Use the REMINDER tag whenever the fire pit is used to be sure the fire is out, and the fire pit is secured. If you are going to cook over the fire, it is recommended that you bring your own charcoal briquets.

  1. The generator is available for use by all. Bring your own charging gear. If you empty the gas can in the generator box, go fill it. The club does not supply fuel for the generator. Use the REMINDER tag whenever the generator is used to be sure it is shut off and locked up before you leave.

  1. The new parking lot is now an east/west line starting at the back (south end) of the club building. All vehicles are to park south of this line. Canopies/tents are to be set up in the new spectator area south of spectator fence and north of the parking lot while leaving adequate space for spectators to stroll the fence line viewing the pits.

  2. There will be no flying over or near the barns to the East of the field.
