Old Business
Mike Murphy – was at Space Camp so there was no Safety review for October.
Mark Schmaltz reported the Vet’s Fly In turned out to be a nice day with the vets enjoying the day. Very light turn out (less than 20) of club members but a nice time for all who attended. Jim Grant presented each vet with a coffee mug that had the KRAM logo on one side and the American flag and THANK YOU! on the other side. Very nice memento of the day – thank you Jim.
Phil Shea gave a quick Swap Shop update. Tables are selling well and we are on track for another sell out! If you need a table, get in touch with Phil ASAP. Mark reported he was getting nice door prize donations from the hobby shops.
Lee Frederickson led continued discussion on the runway condition and options. Everything from doing nothing to some very expensive alternatives was discussed. Suggestions such as:
- Take up all matting and scrape and roll and add 26A gravel
- 125 yards of stone at $10/yard plus delivery
- Moles were suggested as a cause – no evidence to support this idea
- Matt Slobe said the landscape pros suggested 12inch by 12 inch by 12 inch drainage boxes. Would require removing twelve inches of soil and replace with gravel and add corrugated pipe for drainage.
- George Orphan had a business acquaintance from the City of Grand Rapids come out to the field and give his professional opinion. The slope of the land on which the field sits adds to our problem. The water runs from the North West to the south east and because of the slope the velocity of the water adds to our problem. The suggested remedy is to level the entire field. Then we would need to add 21AA modified gravel to a depth of 4 to 6 inches.
- Another suggestion was to water proof the fabric, however this would defeat the purpose of it being permeable.
- Ed Bradley suggested cutting down the size of the mat.
- It was noted that the staples used to hold down the mat will penetrate gravel.
- Lee Frederickson volunteered to talk to the landlords about what they would allow us to do and what equipment they might have that we could rent or borrow.
- Lee Frederickson made a motion to spend up to $500 to rent a double drum roller this fall and have Ed Bradley try to roll out the ruts now and see what it looks like in the spring. Matt Slob seconded the motion and the motion carried.
Lee Frederickson continued discussion on communication. There was no overall support to have added Facebook pages or email lists for personal communication between club members. Those members still working do not want to be reminded when us retirees are out having fun. The club secretary will send a listing of all members to all members with phone numbers and email addresses so each individual can establish their own email group.
