OLD BUSINESS:
Nik – Riders Hobby Shop presentation is delayed until the April meeting
Nik – discussed a hobby shop program whereby stickers would be put on the boxes of new product being sold advertising the local area clubs and training programs available. Sky Hawks are in favor of such a program and a show of hands said we are also. Nik said he got 400 labels for $15 so the program is off and running.
Nik – proposed a new member discount program that coordinates with the new stickers. After discussion, Lee Frederickson motioned and Mike Murphy seconded a proposal to discount first year dues if the new member presented one of our stickers as described above when joining. The discount would be $25 off our $75 membership. Motion carried.
Nik – reminded everyone that 2/13 and 2/27 are the next scheduled winter build nights. Also, he picked up an OS65 for $50 for the plane at the K’zoo swap shop.
Nik – reminded everyone the Buffalo Wild Wings fundraiser date is 2/10. 20% of your bill will be returned to the club so eat hearty!
Nik – reminded everyone of the indoor flying dates – 2/9 and 2/16.
NEW BUSINESS:
Reminder – AMA and Club Dues are now due! AMA is easy to do on line. Club renewal form is on our web site and also attached to the email sent to you from the Treasurer. Please fill out the form and add a check for $75 and mail to the Treasurer at the address listed at the bottom of the form. We still have twenty to go with about half not yet AMA renewed.
Dan noted that Myron Von Seggern passed away last August.
Nik led a discussion about Indoor flying. There will be 15 minute time segments during which the different size birds will fly to eliminate some of the confusion and plane destruction. Groupings will be foamys, micros, and helicopters. All were in favor of giving this process a try.
Mark Shaughnessy presented a calendar of events for 2013 as detailed below:
April 27, 2013 TAG DAY
May 18, 2013 Memorial Fly-In
June 29, 2013 Fun Fly
July 13, 2013 Club Picnic
August 24 -25, 2013 KRAM Great Lakes IMAC Challenge
September 14, 2013 Veterans Fly-In
October 27, 2013 Swap Shop
Nik noted that George Pavey is sponsoring a Boy Scout merit badge event on March 9, 2013 at the school and would appreciate the loan of some aircraft for a static display that day. That is also an indoor flying day so it should be easy to bring a big bird for display while flying.
Nik reported for Mark Schmaltz that the IMAC event has been formally identified as an AMA Sanctioned event.
Ed Bradley noted that we need more stickers to continue the program of advertising the club by putting old airplane magazines in waiting rooms. Nik will follow with George Orphan to get more stickers printed.
Lee Frederickson, as AMA District 7 AAVP, presented a plaque to the club honoring us “In recognition of the club member’s efforts in teaching model aircraft flying and building skills to students of the West Michigan Aviation Academy.”
Lee Frederickson brought in an article from the “Winter Park Pilot” magazine about solar powered charging stations. He noted that the system described would cost about $1700 and we have met the need with a little generator!
Lee also noted the article on the West Michigan Aviation Academy on page 154 of the February, 2013 Model Aviation magazine.
Lee noted that AMA has revised the rules for “First Person View” flying and that it is getting very inexpensive ($300) to get a system and fly in this manner. However, he noted that the AMA rules must be followed when doing so!
Show and Tell
Jim Grant brought in an old timer Toulish Mite. The engine was an ignition engine from the 1930’s – an Arden .09 that was converted to glow in the late 1940’s.
Jarrett Heileman had a little E Flight S Brach which he states “is not for beginners.”
Nik Zinsli had his TechOne Mini Piaget form Hobby World. It is only 2oz. and a nice, quick flyer.
50/50 for February of $18 was won by guest Mike Heileman.
Next meeting: March 5, 2013 at 7:00pm at West Michigan Aviation Academy
Meeting adjourned at 8:05
Motion by: everyone
